Marguerite Antonia Radclyffe Hall (12 August 1880 - 7 October 1943) [1] was an English poet and author, best known for the novel The Well of Loneliness, a groundbreaking work in lesbian literature. In adulthood, Hall often went by the name John, rather than Marguerite.. One of the central figures in this debate is British author Radclyffe Hall (1880-1943). Without question, the most infamous mannish lesbian, Stephen Gordon, protagonist of The Well of Loneliness (1928), was created not by a male pornographer, sexologist, legislator, or novelist but by Hall, herself an "out" and militantly tie-wearing lesbian.

Reading The Well of Loneliness was not quite as sexy of an experience as perhaps I had first pictured, but instead turned out to be an education on how society's views of lesbians have shifted. In many ways, The Well feels outdated and even regressive in some aspects. We would be wrong to think that the only important thing about this novel is that it sparked controversy.. The Well of Loneliness is a lesbian novel by British author Radclyffe Hall that was first published in 1928 by Jonathan Cape. It follows the life of Stephen Gordon, an Englishwoman from an upper-class family whose "sexual inversion" (homosexuality) is apparent from an early age.She finds love with Mary Llewellyn, whom she meets while serving as an ambulance driver during the First World War.
